Planning for the proposed Seaplane Festival on Lake Mulwala for 13-14 September 2025 has been postponed. While we won't have a Festival this year, the SPAA intends to run a Pilot Proficiency Program and Fly-in on that weekend.
Australia has a long and proud association with seaplanes. Qantas, TAA, Air New Zealand and Ansett all operated flying boats to overseas or Pacific destinations. The flying boat base in Sydney was at Rose Bay in Sydney Harbour. Brisbane's was on the Brisbane River, Perth's on the Swan.Â
Smaller floatplanes till operate joy flights from the Derwent River in Hobart, from Williamstown in Melbourne, Rose Bay in Sydney, from the Swan River in Perth, from the Spit on the Gold Coast, and at many other waterways all around the country. Privately owned seaplanes, flown by enthusiast pilots, can be found in every state and territory.
